went to the st. louis show a couple days ago, still amazed that i actually got to see them. it was my first sigur ros concert, here's some of my thoughts and ramblings:
got there plenty early and ended up in the front middle of the pit, great view. amina came out for about 30 minutes and i was very impressed by them, the first few songs were "ok", but the latter part of their set really picked up and the crowd was really into them, big round of applause for the saw playing too.
amina went off stage and i could barely wait in anticipation for sigur ros to come out. they pulled up the curtain and takk... started playing then into glosoli, my smile got bigger and bigger as the crescendo built up, blown away by that song live. hearing it live was really great and uplifting. the sound quality was really great and the bass was incredible all night. seemed like jonsi was having problems with his mic volume early as he kept gesturing anxiously to the sound guy, but i could hardly tell the difference, he sounded amazing all night. went into ný batterí next, which was one of the songs i was looking forward to the most. during that song and throughout the whole night georg would play while looking out onto the audience with this peaceful smile as if he was feeding off us and just having a great time, very cool. after sæglópur they went into njósnavélin which had always been one one of my favorites since the first time i heard it but now i have a whole new appreciation for it after seeing it live, a truely perfect song to me. then came e-bow, which i was looking forward to so much after they started putting it back into the setlist after leaving it off early in the tour, sounded so defined the whole the way and the climax along with the visuals on the backdrop were very moving. after hearing those two songs off () my night was made, and the show wasn't even half over yet :)
hoppípolla/með blóðnasir were really two of the most beautiful sounding songs i've ever heard, especially the end of með, i was just lost in the music by then. olsen olsen caught my by surprise, i really wasn't that excited to see it going into the night, but it totally took me by surprise, jonsi sounded particularly tight and i'll never forget when he let the bow roar into the orgy of sound at the end, great performance. then came one of the moments i'll never forget during hafssól, jonsi actually broke the strings on his bow while getting so into the song about halfway through, and by the end of the song it was broke in half and he was just pounding what looked like a wet noodle into the pickups of his guitar, a lasting image in my mind. svo hljótt and heysátan sounded great as always, then they went backout for the second encore and what i had been waiting for all night was here, popplagið. the excitement in my bones was crazy when kjartan went into the opening riffs, i was completely awestruke through the entire song, never heard anything sound that amazing live before. orri's drumming was so powerful all night and really shined through here. the sheer volume of the whole song was mindblowing. got so many chills and nearly lost myself during the climax, perfect ending to a perfect night. they and amina came out for two set of bows to thunderous applause and then left to a full house of truely satisfied fans.
i came into the concert expecting to see the best concert i had ever seen and walked away completely in awe. thank you so much sigur ros, come back soon!
