the opening band, album leaf, was very good. they sounded kind of like godspeed you
black emperor (and i wasn't the only one to think so). their set lasted a little less
than half an hour and not even twenty mintues after they had left stage did the lights
black out and sigur ros descend from the clouds and into our presence.
the images projected onto the back of the set were amazing, as they went along with the music in an indirectly perfect manner. "vaka" was played, strangely enough, with the doll face from the von cover projected...the doll looked liked it was near a candle, a soft orange light flickered and made the shadows of its contours dance. vaka ended, and i regained a bit of my senses, i was a little shocked since the band pretty much started playing unannounced in total darkness. the lights came up a bit and i looked around to notice that everybody around me either had a tear in their eye or was flat out bawling. i raised a hand to my cheek... wetness. truly a magical expirience.
the vic was pretty tiny, though packed to the brim. it was just about the most peaceful (and diverse) crowd i've ever seen at a concert. men and women aged 18-60 were there, all were "getting into it."
it was my first time hearing the nothing song, but i was impressed by it. the song lead in directly to an extended e-bow solo replacing the horns at the begining of ny batteri. i have gone to many a concert in my day and i can say that the e bow solo was the first time i can ever say that a musician has done something so beautiful that it (pardon the vernacular) flat out blew my fucking mind. it started as a small gurgle, i thought that maybe he was tuning it or something, only it kept going. the gurgle grew like a snowball down a hill, gaining level upon level of what had to have been sheer beauty. a minute or so into the solo i looked up, thinking that the rest of the band was playing, they weren't. all the noise was coming from the e bow. wow.
if you ever get a chance to see this band perform live, do it. this is easily the
best small venue show that i've ever been to.
