inní mér syngur vitleysingur (help with lyrics)
(the second half)
en best i lífu
hvar jósinn þinu
ég klink gitárri
og vanta hári
hyllum átum
fand mig grátum
þu lær mig vitus
þu lær mér kisses
og ritna bræntur
Höldumst þin hendur
ég sér dig vakinn
ég sér dig nakinn
inní mér syngur
vitleysingur
altaf i vala
við laupum frá la?
alt verðist harra
og ég ska arra
....ara??
...purtifara (???)
repeat...
Yeah, please help.

i don't have the confirmed lyrics but i wrote down what i hear in the crescendo part. i added my own little translations but this is definitely not a
professional job so please excuse me if it's not 100% right. i take slight creative licenses in a couple of the lines to make the meaning clearer.
minn besti vinur - my best friend
hverju sem dynur - whatever may happen
ég kyngi tári - i swallow a tear
og anda hári - and breathe in your hair
illum látum - making a ruckus
í faðmi grátum - embracing, we cry
þegar að við hittumst - when we meet
þegar að við kyssumst - when we kiss
varirnar brenndu - lips burning
höldumst í hendur - holding hands
ég sé þig vakinn - i see you awake
ég sé þig nakinn - i see you naked
inní mér syngur - inside me sings
já, vitleysingur - a lunatic
allt -- ?? - everything --
við hlaupum hraðar - we run faster
allt verður smærra - everything becomes smaller
ég öskra hærra - i scream louder
-- ??
í burtu fara ?? - going away

Höldumst þin hendur = almost sounds like "halten uns die hände" which is german for holding our hands.
what's the translation for it?

Höldumst í hendur means exactly the same as yours in German. If you translate it directly, word-by-word, it’s really wir halten uns in
Hände (give or take a few misconjugations and misdeclinations). But both höldumst (from the verb halda) and hendur (plural of
hönd) mean exactly what they look like.
(Höldumst þín hendur doesn’t really mean anything much, though—wir halten uns dein Hände)

á stjörnuhraða(?) - At starspeed
inni í hjarta springur - Inside my heart bursts**
flugvélarbrak - An aeroplane-rumble(?)***
ofaní jörðu syngur - Sings above the earth.
ég óska mér - I make a wish

* or It lights..., or the 'silvery thing in line 1' lights?

Brak means something like ‘din’. I think these two lines go together as one: Inni í hjarta springur flugvélarbrak, “In my heart, the
roar of an airplane explodes”. I don’t think it’s the heart itself that bursts—thankfully.
| quote: | | allt gleymist í smásmá stund - May everything be forgotten in an instant |
I’m not sure, but it seems more ‘natural’ in my head that would mean “All is forgotten for a brief moment”.

About as good as my somewhat shoddy Icelandic translations, I’d say. (Not sure if that’s a compliment or an insult, but hey—at least some of it was
correct!) :þ

I wasn't sure about that, so I left the full stop out - which made it sound a bit awkward. Perhaps: "In my heart explodes the roar of an aeroplane
which sings above the earth"?

Yeah, that does sound better. I originally thought it sounded a bit odd to have the indicative "all is forgotten" followed by the (in my
translation) subjunctive "may the wish" - but there's probably a way to reword that bit.
Incidentally, how does "að rætast" conjugate? My dictionary doesn't say.

I don’t think that’s a subjunctive at all, actually. Og nú rætist það, “And now it comes true”.

Unfortunately I never learnt in which contexts the subjunctive's used in Icelandic. Here, I imagined Jónsi closing his eyes, hoping the wish would
could true. Then he opens his eyes and realises his wish was in vain (hence "ó nei").

Oh, thanks so much for starting me on that train of thought. The line "inní mér syngur vitleysingur" now gives me rather unpleasant flashbacks to
the film Shortbus. :/

The optative is one of the cases where it’s used. It’s also used in many subjunct relative clauses where the verb in the main clause deals with the
usual suspects (doubt, uncertainty, hope, wishing, belief, etc.). In that regard, it’s quite similar to the German one, I believe.

as far as i can hear it's 'silfurá' which is a silver river... but i'm not sure. so (not sure it's in exactly the right order):
on a silver river
(that) lights the whole world
and the blue eyes
cut the starry sky
i close my eyes
and make a whish
yes, go on
now it comes true
oh, no
at the speed of a star
the heart bursts inside
the wreck of an airplane
sings inside the earth
i make a wish
and now i close my eyes
yes, go on
???
everything is forgotten for a moment
then it comes true
open my eyes
oh, no
edit: yeah, maybe it's not the heart that explodes but the airplane :)
edit edit: but maybe it is.
|
|
|
could it be then "á silfur á" ?
there can be no understanding between the hand and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator.
|
|
|
yeah, but it'd be written in one word, "á slifurá". or well, that's how i'd write it.

Hmm … I think I need to watch that movie again. That there rings absolutely no bells whatsoever.
|
|
|
Hm, you've probably blocked it out of your memory, or else I've seen some extended/uncut version. Perhaps if I reword the line "inn í mig
syngur vitleysingur"...
|
|
|
I don’t think there is a non-uncut version of Shortbus. If there is, it much be a very short movie.
But I never remember very much of films, so I’m not surprised it doesn’t ring any bells. It’s part of the reason why I can watch movies again and
again and still enjoy them. :)

Why does the "þín" go inbetween the adjective and substantive?
|
|
|
I don’t know, and I’m not sure it really should—it just sounded best in my head. I guess þín blá augu would work as well.

Word inversion. Occurs (among other things) when an adverbial unit is fronted to the top of the sentence, in order to keep the verb in the second
semantic slot in a phrase.

þín bláu augu would be more correct
bláu = plural

...my close intuitive listening has determined the the lyrics are the following...
Seven hours since you went away
Eleven coffees, Rickki Lake on play
But late at night when I'm feeling blue
I'd sell my ass before I think of you
Seven hours since you closed the door
Started a diet, got a manicure
Erased your number from my telephone
And if you call me I won't be at home
He said...
[Bridge:]
Why'd you cryeee yii-ee
For the guy-ee-yii-e
Say goodbye-ee-yii-ee
Runaway
Why'd you cryeee yii-ee
For the guy-ee-yii-e
Say goodbye-ee-yii-ee
I said ok, 'cos.
[Chorus]
Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head
Because I do boy,
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy,
Such a fool boy
Eleven hours on a brand new day
I'm getting ready to go out and play
It's late at night, I'm caught in a groove
I'd kiss my ass before I'm feeling blue
Seven hours, what you calling for?
A bunch of flowers and I slam the door
You're in my face, sorry what's your name?
Takes more than begging to reverse my brain
'cos...
[Chorus]
Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head
Because I do boy,
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy,
Such a fool boy
I'm through with it
Over it
Not having it
Crazy sh*t
Not feeling this
Can't deal, I quit
No more, No more
I'm through with it
Not having it
This crazy sh*t
Not feeling it
Can't deal with it
No more, I quit
No more, no more
Breaking off the ...
A brand new day has just begun
Just because you made me go "ooh"
Doesn't mean I'll put up with you
Don't you dare come back
Can't u see I wont take that?
I ain't crying over you
Better fill your head up like I told you
[Bridge]
Why'd you cryeee yii-ee
For the guy-ee-yii-e
Say goodbye-ee-yii-ee
Runaway
Why'd you cryeee yii-ee
For the guy-ee-yii-e
Say goodbye-ee-yii-ee
I said ok, 'cos.
[Chorus]
Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head
Because I do boy,
And it's cool boy
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy,
Such a fool boy (such a fool)
[Chorus]
Ooh, won't you miss me like a hole in the head
Because I do boy (I do)
And it's cool boy (yeah it's cool)
And ooh, bet you never thought I'd get out of bed
Because of you boy, (I do boy)
Such a fool boy (such a fool)
