björk + sigur rós concert

just posted this on the news page

iceland concert with björk
31 may 2008

björk and sigur rós will be holding a large outdoor concert together in reykjavík on june 28th. the concert will be held to raise awareness of environmental issues in iceland.

in an interview in today’s morgunblaðið newspaper, björk criticizes the increasing heavy industry in iceland, particularly the highly pollutant aluminum smelters being built left and right.

“sigur rós and i are neither environmental experts nor politicians, but we travel around the world a lot and we have seen how far behind iceland is in conserving our environment. for example, i was in south america for two months and you could see all these impoverished people recycling. we can’t be 30 years behind but we need to be in the forefront.”

sigur rós and björk will also be teaming up to create a website with input from experts on the icelandic environment, focusing on the alternatives to heavy industry for the icelandic economy.

joining them on stage will be ólöf arnalds as well as foreign guests, to be announced later. the precise location of the concert will be announced at a later date.

psst! a little rumor bird whispered into my ear that one of the the foreign guests might be a certain british band which you are all very well aware of... and is talked about frequently on the board. discuss :p

GREAT!!! I want to go there!!!

I wish I could find a sponsor for a flight to Reykjavik... :-(
although it wouldn't be very eco-friendly to take a plane just to go to a concert...

so I hope there will be a live stream on internet...

Just wondering...

Is there a reason they won't announce the special guests? I'm just curious about the psychology behind that kind of decision. I mean, if they are confirmed and everything, where's the harm? What is the benefit of allowing speculation to build up about who it is? I'm assuming nobody is going to fly up to Iceland just to see those special guests, therefore taking away from the spectacle of a Bjork/Sigur Ros benefit gig, so the question remains: If you're going to announce there will be a special guest, why would you then not say who it is?

I dunno, I missed that one. That was from their studio, right?
But these days many concerts and festivals have a live stream on internet for all those who can't go to the concert/festival, so why not?!

i really like björk and radiohead (if its them). not seen either live since 1996.

lefse quote
1-6-2008 at 06:53

Well how long will it be? If they have björk, sigur ros plus foreign bands they will only be able to play a few songs each, I think. Will it be like 3 or 4 for each band, or will some play more than others?

It seriously blows my mind to think of radiohead and sigur on the same stage, in iceland, interacting with each other. But if its only a taste of each of their concerts and more for the cause than the music, then I'm less likely to stress over going. I'll be in the UK anyway, and I'll fly over if its going to be that good.

Not just you.
Others too lately have been acting a bit fucked up.
Like a band they like releasing one song they DON'T like equals the end of the world.

"Sigur Ros - just a band."

I wish they had included that in the new vocal edit.

Radiohead would have to squish it in between the Glasgow and Manchester gigs, which would create a pretty demanding schedule. I'd speculate that the mystery band could be R.E.M.

Hey, I'm about to spend €300 on a ticket to reykjavik for this concert thingy, but I'd hate to find out later that the different bands will only play like 3 or 4 songs as lefse pointed out before...

Any news on the length of the performances yet, or can I expect it any time soon?

cheers,
Martijn

I'm about to start planning my flight and stay too - from Canada - but would like to know more about the show and the venue and ticket availability too - been planning on visiting Iceland when I had more time to plan and in a better financial position - but this concert sounds like devine providence that I must go to Iceland NOW!

radiohead will be in scotland the day before, which is the closest country to iceland. if they catch a plane already scheduled (without their tons of equipment) then they've not done any environmental damage, quite the contrary: they've raised awareness around the world about environmental issues in the last untouched wilderness in europe.

here's to hoping...

darren quote

icelandair fly just twice per week from glasgow to rvk and its the 26th and the 29th.. so radiohead would have to go private or via somewhere else :(
