PETER BROEDERICK |
i just realised that i've been confusing Peter Broderick and Peter Brotzmann and consequently ignoring Broderick because i assumed he was 'free
jazz'. i will now listen to the real Peter Broderick

bit rash! i was annoyed by him when i saw him live - might give another go though. i like stef of type's artwork for it at least:

I'm currently listening and enjoying it very much, specially Another Glacier.
Thanks for the recommendation :)
|
|
|
it's glorious, but i had high hopes the vinyl version might be a bit more aesthetically pleasing. type stuff is usually exceptional.
nonetheless, a lovely, lovely album.
|
|
|
just listening to it again and in some parts reminds me of Max
Richter, in others of Efterklang...
really good album.
|
|
|
Must agree, this is an excellent album. Was really impressed by his Efterklang support as well
Don't bother reading this it will just hurt your eyes
|
|
|
I've bought his 'Docile' album 2 weeks ago after his support for Efterklang.
I really like what he's doing, guess I'm buying Float soon :)
Maybe you should also check Library Tapes, just add www.myspace.com/ before that and you will get there. Also very nice music

another great suggestion from the SR message board, the vinyl arrived yesterday and it is really beautiful (the music rather than the vinyl).....

to Janneke: i am aware of Library Tapes (the releases on Resonant), very nice indeed. but i prefer Peter Broderick, more 'concrete' pieces of music
rather than experimental pieces as such in the case of Library Tapes. Definitely check out Float, it's superior to Docile imho.
|
|
|
You have a point here :)
And I'll check out Float, it's on my list :)

Thanks for the tip Janneke, noticed that Peter Broderick is actually one of the Library Tapes collaborators. He sure seems to get around.

Check out the latest blog entry on his myspace site - there's a couple of
beautiful new tracks called 'Below It' and 'Not At Home' from a soon to be released album called 'Home'. He's temporarily ditching the
piano/strings in favour of some gorgeous Jose Gonzalez-style guitars and layered vocals.
I saw him a few weeks ago with Efterklang - he totally blew me away - vocals, drums, violin, tin whistle and furiously drumming the hell out of the
(tiny) stage they were on. There seems to be nothing he can't do.
Just superb...
|
|
|
^ It's out now in the US, and comes out 19th October, I think, in Europe.
I listened to a leaked copy coming into work this morning, and it's great - all guitars and layered vocals - really, really good. The last track
he's been playing at his recent gigs, the one where he comes into the crowd whizzing a whirly-stick around, is 'Games Again', the last track on
this album.
He's made a new album myspace site with 6 tracks from the album on
it, and there's another 2 tracks on his usual myspace site. Which is almost
all of them.
Love this guy, amazing musician.
|
|
|
i had no idea it had leaked, will track that down and be sure to get the cd later.
Off topic - if you like Broderick, Richter, Johannsson, Yoshida, then try HAUSCHKA - Ferndorf http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=128107 it's pretty special

I love Peters work. Can't wait for the new album.
I've been listening to a lot of wonderful contemporary classical music recently. Favourites include Gorecki's Symphony No3, Gavin Bryars 'The
Sinking Of The Titanic'. Morton Feldman, Michael Nyman, Alexandre Desplat, the soundtrack he wrote for the film 'Syriana' is beautiful.
I'm trying to get into some Shostakovich, but very slowly as it's not such easy listening!
I've also enjoyed a lot of CD's on the ECM label - Tord Gustavsen Trio, Ketil Bjornstad, David Darling, Esbjorn Svensson Trio etc are all worth
checking out - some lovely music there.

There's also another unreleased song called 'Refining' which he did for a compliation album - it's only short (2mins) but it's the same kind of
guitar/vocal track that is the stuff of the new album, I'm slightly surprised it wasn't included on the album. There's a link to directly download
this track here.
Also, you might have missed this which dougmartsch posted on the Efterklang thread - it's a recording of his set supporting Efterklang in Berlin on
2nd September:-
http://www.sendspace.com/file/47v6x0
It's not the greatest quality, but a fine demonstration of how he performs his solo act - looping piano on piano, strings on piano, piano/strings
over saw action, vocals on vocals and vocals on everything. Sublime. Tracklist as follows:-
1. Introduction
2. The Piano Race
3. Begin/Return (from Docile)
4. Below It (from Home)
5. Dearest (from Docile)
6. Something Has Changed (from Float - very different version)
7. Games Again (from Home - with piano instead of guitar)

|
For those of you that love the more piano/strings side to Peter's music, in the vein of Float and Docile, you should get hold of the new Library
Tapes album, A Summer Beneath The Trees, which is released at the end of this month.
It's spectacular - much less minimal than previous Library Tapes releases, mostly due to the multi-instrumentalist talents of Mr. Broderick.
There's a good Pitchfork review here:-
"A Summer Beneath the Trees is still pretty ascetic, but by Wenngren's usual standards, it's practically Wagner... Here, Broderick
complements Wenngren's piano with a wide variety of accompaniment: violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celesta, viola, and banjo... This is the
fullest, most finished-sounding Library Tapes project since it was an official duo and may suit listeners who need more than a few endlessly revolving
piano notes better than recent offerings. For fans of Max Richter, Tim Hecker, and Eluvium, A Summer Beneath the Trees is a can't-miss album."
Very true :)

|
|
i just adore this guy. can't believe he's my age - it's enough to make one feel quite inadequate. :-/
|
|
|
Just got back from seeing him play tonight. He was wonderful, as ever and it only cost a fiver. I agree wiresparrow, the fact that he seems to be able
to play pretty much any instrument so well, does make you feel a bit inadequate. Will be seeing him again at Union Chapel in a few weeks, should be
good.
Don't bother reading this it will just hurt your eyes

every time i read the title of this thread, all i can think of is, "beuller?.....beuller?"
matthew + peter, 2 completely different names i know. i can't explain it :/
"we are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting
down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp
on vague charges of being a terrorist sympathizer." hunter s thompson

i edited the name of the thread so we can discuss his other releases too :D
any feedback for the new album Home yet? I sitll have to listen to it...

i really like it. some of it sounds very like 'songs of green pheasant' which i wasn't expecting but it's a treat.
|
|
|
I think Home is a great record. I think it's much better than Songs of Green Pheasants album (and I really liked that).
He's just so sickeningly talented, damned annoying :-)
the path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom..
|
|

Home is a fantastic record, very different if you're used to his piano/strings songs, but just as good. Now for his next record he needs to stop
teasing us and employ all his multi-instrumentalist talents to make the best one-man-band album in the history of music!
You will all love the new Library Tapes album that he's done which I mentioned a few posts up, if you want to try before you buy then u2u me
and I'll send you the link.

i dont really like Songs of Green Pheasants... guess i'll stick to Float.

no, don't let that description put you off.......Home is a great album. More Bon Iver than SOGP

yeh i will listen to it anyway :)
btw CD already out in the USA for Hush Records.
|
|
|
after some proper listening i must admit this Home's got a bunch of really good songs.
it is surprisingly different from Float, which only proves this guy's got skills.
edit: tracks like It's all right, Below it... remind me of Red House Painters

my vinyl edition arrived yesterday it really is beautiful......

Some UK tour dates in February which aren't on his myspace yet:-
February 2009
Wed 4th - London The Social W1
Thu 5th - Bath Moles Club
Sat 7th - Bristol Folk House
Sun 8th - Manchester University
Mon 9th - York The Duchess
Sat 14th - London Union Chapel Project
Mon 16th - Brighton The Freebutt
Tue 17th - Coventry The Tin Angel
And I've checked the info for the Feb 9th gig at The Duchess,
York (the one I'll be going to) and for the first time he's not the supporting act, which is tremendous news as we'll get a full
length set. Support in York is from Share and The Olympic Symphonium, neither of whom I've heard of. I haven't checked info for the other gigs but
I'd guess it's the same deal. Well excited now...
edit: plus, this is interesting, from his myspace blog:-
Hello Friends.
I'm writing to ask for your help on a new song. I would like to ask whoever is willing to make a recording of themselves reciting the text below, and
then email the recording to me at peter.broderick@yahoo.com
Speak it, whisper it, shout it, sing it, growl it, get your child, parrot (this would be especiaiy cool -- bonus points to whoever gets a parrot to do
it!), dog or cat to say it, however you like. All recordings will be used in this song. You can also send me a CD-R of the recording
if you wish. Just email and ask for my address :-)
Here is the text, and thanks so much in advance if you can help me out on this!

A long time ago, a friend bought one and it had a stereo microphone that was really fun to play with as you could move the microphone or whatever was
making the sound to have interesting panning effects.

Peter Broderick - Roscoe / Games Again 7"

Released in October last year, with a very limited run of just 300 copies worldwide, it's a superb cover of Roscoe, by Midlake, along with the
alternative piano version of Games Again, from Home, which is the version he plays live. It's a 320kbps vinyl rip, and well worth downloading.

I WILL record that concert OH yes I WILL record that concert : )
do you know the support?
|
|
|
^ In York the following night it's The Olympic Symphonium and Share, but I think it may be different support each night.
Is he playing Academy 3 in Manchester? - if so, it's a cracking venue, great sound system, you should get a decent recording. I'd come to this one
as well but I fear my girlfriend would break my legs.
|
|
|
he is playing Academy 3 - glad to hear about the sound system. The support is Danny Saul?
So I will see you there then - the one in the wheel chair?? : )
|
|
|
^ Yeah, that'll be me, possibly with two black eyes and my own severed penis stuffed in my mouth as well. In fact, I'd better just stick with York,
and rely on your recording for the Manchester experience instead.
