Most Overrated Films

Since there is a thread about the best movies, why not make another list on most overrated films, in no particluar order.

Amelie (Features an in your face romanticism that ripped off from chungking express, it’s just not the charmer it desperately wants to be)

Star Wars (Some fancy costumes, a lot of video-gameish speical effects, childish space battles, with the help of horrible Shakespearian dialogue, and there you have the star wars)

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (Great concept but poorly executed, even vanilla sky has more sunshine than this one)

The Searchers (Well, the title doesn't lie, there certainly is a great deal of searching in this movie, a search for a character we barely know in the hands of some villains we don't mind)

Forest Gump (Miracles do happen, on idiots only)

i like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I do agree that it could be better.

Forrest Gump is a classic, I can't not like it, it's great. hehe.

Amelie.. is not the best movie in the world, but it is okay.

I won't comment SW :S.

And I can't think of any movie that I think is overrated right now.. hmmm..

The Searchers is most certainly not overrated....
It's magnificent when it comes to subtle symbolism and the fact that there is a whole back story that is conveyed through these symbols and subtle gestures.
Excellent movie.

Eternal Sunshine is not, in my opinion, poorly executed. It can be a bit tiresome after watching it a few times but the first time I saw it in theatres it was a magical experience.

I agree with crath24 about Garden State, though now I can't really be bothered with it.

mmmagda quote
16-10-2006 at 03:43

I agree with "ACobb", Eternal Sunshine was magical at first watching but might be one of those movies that can't be watched over and over again within short timeframes

I think Lost in Translation is a bit overrated, even though it's on my favourites list... actually I think it's really overrated. there are a lot of things that I really liked about it, but some aspects of it really irritated me too...

Star Wars should be given an award for most overrated movie of all time

are you talking the historic backgound behind the civil war? The story is a brave one to tackle with its undertones of racism. Ultimately though, for me, the weakness of the film is Wayne himself. The character he portrays is a very complex one, his outlook affected by past experiences with the Indians and in the Civil War. However the role proves beyond his grasp. Clint Eastwood regularly played the hard man but there was never any doubt that he was decent underneath it all. No such subtlety from Redneck John. When the story requires him show some compassion, you just can't believe him.

I cannot for the life of me understand why this goofy, campy sci-fi is so highly regarded as I find it certainly to be the most overrated movie of all time and undoubtedly one of the most boring movies and that is the greatest sin of all.

The civil war, yes, but mostly I'm talking about the personal background between Wayne and the mother character (can't remember her name), how it is suggested that she and wayne have had a past and that the daughter that was taken away may be his. Even if she isn't though, Wayne's undying love for the mother is transposed onto her daughter after the mother is killed. She is the only thing Wayne has left, and that's why he goes to any length needed to try to get her back.

Let's not talk about if cinema is not an art form but rather an entertainment to satisfy our sensory delight . Why do I post this thread? Because I feel there are movies out there that are being overly priased, like the person above who claimed the searcher is the greatest film ever made. Being overrated is not pretentious at all, it's good to be talked about than not being talked about. And besides, what's the fun to discuss something we all love or hate.

Do you have to accept my opinion? Of course not. We are entiled to our own opinion as to whether you like it or not, and I welcome your guys critique over two cents as long as you respect mine.

see I didn't get this impression from him, I knew he was a racist and a egomaniac. But the bond between Wayne and mother was never developed. Maybe it's John Wayne's expressionless performance or I really missed this subtlety in the film.
